ReplyDeleteNo. German desserts makes sense. It is describing a type of dessert. That's fine. There are a wide variety of different desserts and some use national markings to describe its particular attributes. Although it may be misleading on the actual origins of the dessert, it is not inherently racist.
ReplyDeleteDescribing a STD as "Panamanian," on the other hand, is. It does not accurately describe the STD. What is "Panamanian" about gonnorhea? "Panamanian STDs" implies that there is something particularly "Panamanian" about STDs in Panama. But people who had STDs in Panama were often as likely NOT to be Panamanian.
So, yes, it is racist. Your use of "Panamanian" creates artificial social divisions based on a preconceived idea of "Panamanian-ness" as a biological category that subjects STDs to a particular group of people. My statement stands.
